“My Best Nursing Job Ever”

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

written by Chico David RN from allnurses.com

I’ve stayed broadly in one branch of nursing – cardiac rehabilitation – for almost my whole career. But I’ve managed to find variety by taking on different roles during that time. I’ve worked inpatient and outpatient, I’ve managed the department for a while. Now I’m working per diem and am sort of the all around pinch hitter for the department and related areas.

But the very best period of my working life was when part of my job description was “cardiac liaison nurse”. The bulk of my time in that job was spent in providing the pre- and post-op education for cardiac surgery patients. But the plum was that I would go into the OR a few times during each case and come out to give the family a quick update on how things were going.

Be Proud To Be A Nurse

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Nurses are highly skilled individuals that provide care, support, and life saving duties to our society. They should be respected and highly regarded for the impact they bring to people who get sick or injured and those who just need some health assistance. Nurses shouldn’t be taken for granted because of the vital role they play in the health care industry.

Here are some things that nurses should be proud of:

  • Being a nurse requires skills in analyzing, planning, organizing, and problem solving.

Analyzing – this skill is necessary in order to make proper judgment. Nurses handle medications and other patient needs and information, so they have to be highly analytical to make decisions when needed.

Planning – a nursing job is usually in a fast paced environment. So they need to plan their day ahead and in order to cater to everything that needs to be done. No scheduled task must be missed.

Organizing – nurses are responsible for  handling patient records, medicine intake schedule for patients, and other daily schedule of test and activities for patients. They can’t afford to mix up the medications or patient records.

Problem Solving – nurses encounter life and death scenarios in the work place regularly, so their problem solving skills must be fast and efficient since they help physicians do their job well and they even provide necessary remedies in the absence of physicians. Lives are at stake so nurses shouldn’t make stupid mistakes. They must be innovative and resourceful to get a job done.

  •  Nurses can develop and possess skills relevant to other job positions like counseling, teaching, and even management skills. These are highly beneficial, since these skills give nurses the edge of being able to adapt and qualify for other job opportunities.

Counseling – nurses are exposed to sick and injured people and their families, which require them to advise or counsel these people specially at times of emotional turmoil. Nurses always try to make the patients and their families feel comfortable and secure in cases where there are medical procedures to be conducted – life threatening or not – people worry, so nurses are their to provide emotional support and assistance.

Teaching – nurses are like teachers too. They teach not only children but parents and other adults as well. They teach people about proper hygiene, what to do during sickness, basic remedies, proper medication procedures, and other daily routines to follow to have a healthier lifestyle.

Management – nursing has a wide branch of levels and specialties and some nursing positions require the handling of other staff and personnel. Like CNAs (Certified Nursing Assistants), LPNs (Licensed Practical Nurses), and LVNs (Licensed Vocational Nurses) work under the supervision of or assist RNs (Registered Nurses) and other specialty nurses.

  •  Nurses are versatile, adaptable, and flexible. Also aside from being multi-talented, people in the nursing profession are considered to be one of the most dependable, honest, reliable, and hard working individuals. They are able to work in different environments despite some obstacles like limited resources, danger during disaster assistance, life threatening emergencies and situations and the likes.

Other skills nurses possess include the following:

Excellent Communication Skills – nurses deliver or relay simple to complex and technical information to different individuals with varied personalities, level of understanding, and emotional state. Also their communication skills are tested on stressful situations in a regular basis and being able to adjust their methods of communication is important to fit their purpose and current situation.

Salesmanship – having good convincing powers and customer service skills is very important in being a nurse. You face various situations where you need to convince people to do things like tell patients to take their medicines; tell patients to do a test or exercise; tell families and even patients to relax, calm down, and don’t worry during surgeries, operations, or when breaking a bad news; advising people to do certain steps that are necessary for their health, safety, or survival.

To sum it all up, every nurse should be proud of what they do and their chosen profession.  They not only possess top skills and qualities, they also provide a significant role in society which is helping the sick, the young, the old, and the needy in terms of health maintenance, sickness and injuries treatment, and most of all during life threatening instances of our lives.

Thanks to all nurses in the world… Keep it up guys… God bless you all…
