Consulting Sleep Problems with Parents Lead To Better Bedtime Habits

Monday, September 12th, 2011

A study conducted on children with sleeping problems revealed that discussing sleep strategies with parents could help youngsters settle into school with better nighttime routines.
The study by author Jon Quach, and his team, from the University of Melbourne, in Australia showed that these children tended to have better bedtime habits. The research confirmed that most of these sleep problems are related to the children’s behavior which included not having a bedtime routine or going to bed late. This is also the age when night-time fears play a major part in children’s thoughts.
The study was done on 161 parents who fit in the problem situation of having a child with a moderate or severe sleeping problem. They were divided into two groups, one with consultation therapies while the other was not in a controlled environment. Parents reported that children whose parents were in the consultation group had less resistance at bedtime and took less time to go to bed.
Sleep problems are a common occurrence in school children and are best handled through a behavior-based intervention. Establishing a bedtime routine such as reading a bedtime story, making sure to put the child in bed before 9 and encouraging them to sleep on their own are some simple interventions that could help develop better habits.
